Treatment Modalities and Therapeutic Techniques

Life Skills Institute and Clinic has a therapy dog named Puck. He is non-allergenic and very friendly. However if clients have a fear of dogs, he will not be present in the sessions.

We use a variety of therapeutic techniques. You always have a choice in whether you wish to experience a particular technique.

Here is a list of some of the techniques used:

  1. Behavioral techniques: assertiveness training, relaxation training, behavior modification, positive reinforcement, cognitive re-structuring
  2. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  3. Visualization techniques
  4. Stress management techniques
  5. Creative techniques: letter writing, journaling, playing the piano, use of art materials
  6. Psychological testing: MMPI, Myer-Briggs, Strong Campbell, Kuder, etc.
  7. “Experiments” – trying out new behaviors/actions and observing what happens
  8. Exercises, including (but not limited to): centering, grounding, boundaries, communication
  9. Mindfulness
Our counseling repertoire is not limited to these specific modalities. We work with you to make sure that treatment is individualized and that the techniques used fit the person and the problem properly.
